Amenity Horticulture 1 Duration icon 100 hours Qualification icon Statement of Attainment Lessons icon 7 lessons

WHAT IS AMENITY HORTICULTURE?

Horticulture can be divided into two sectors:

Crop Production

Amenity Horticulture, which is involved with growing plants for recreational or ornamental purposes. However, these should not be seen as clear-cut divisions.

Boundaries defining the two sectors tend to vary from country to country and between horticultural institutions and employers. For example, some horticulturists might view floriculture enterprises or wholesale nurseries as being in the production sector, while others would classify them as amenity industries. Major sectors within the amenity horticulture industry typically include the following:

  • Arboriculture
  • Landscape industry
  • Parks and gardens
  • Turf management
  • Nurseries – retail and wholesale
  • Interior landscaping
  • Floriculture

Learn to Manage Gardens

Who manages amenity horticulture sites?

These days many different professions are involved in the management of natural and designed landscapes, including architects, town planners, engineers, landscape architects, environmental scientists, sport and recreation specialists, botanists, biologists, horticulturists and agronomists. Depending on the size and nature of the site, and the inputs required to manage that site, people from these (and possibly other) professions might be employed as specialist consultants, as site managers or as team leaders.

The management of a horticultural site typically includes the following tasks:

  • Defining a mission, vision, goals and activities planning
  • Ensuring that the above are reached or planned within a specified time-frame
  • Managing budgets
  • Managing human resources
  • Managing material resources
  • Managing natural resources

What that means is that the manager must define where the organisation is going or, if that is already defined, how to get there with the resources available, in the time available. This usually means looking for more resources and solving problems related to the running of the amenity site together with the team that he or she is leading.

This is a module from the RHS M.Hort (based on curriculum developed by the Royal Horticultural Society); this can be taken either as part of the M.Hort Program, as a module in one of our other qualifications or as a stand alone course (Ideal for use as a Professional Development program for persons working in the horticulture industry anywhere in the world).

Certificate In Garden Design Duration icon 600 hours Qualification icon Certificate

Start your garden design business

Most students undertake this course with the purpose of setting up their own business.

It covers quoting, estimating and other business associated information needed to succeed in this field - plus landscaping, design, plant culture and plant identification.

Streets ahead of most other similar courses which seem to concentrate on design - however you cannot design a workable garden without knowing about plants and landscaping techniques as well!

“People working in garden design or as landscape gardeners will find this to be a very comprehensive course. Not only will you learn about construction techniques, garden features, and landscape detailing, but you will also learn how to draw plans and design different types of gardens. Add to that; plant, soil, and maintenance knowledge, and you can appreciate the diversity and completeness of this compelling course.” - Gavin Cole B.Sc., Psych.Cert., Cert.Garden Design, MACA.

This course provides effective training for people working, or wishing to work, in the landscape industry; either in their own business, or at a supervisory level for someone else.

It is a course which both develops the students design skills, as well as basic knowledge in other areas of concern to the landscaper (eg. horticultural practices, management, plant identification and use, and marketing); and on completion of this course the student should be able to draw landscape plans, compile specifications, and prepare cost estimates.

There are thirty lessons taking around 600 hours to complete.

The main difference between this Certificate and the Certificate in Horticulture ( Landscaping and Garden Design) is the emphasis on the various styles of garden design, such as cottage, playground and bush garden design for example.

Garden Maintenance Duration icon 100 hours Qualification icon Statement of Attainment Lessons icon 10 lessons

Learn how to effectively maintain a garden while reducing the amount of time, labour and costs involved.

Proper garden maintenance will cost you both time and money. Fortunately, there are shortcuts to help you have a good-looking garden without spending a huge amount of time or money on your property.

We usually think of garden maintenance as a summer priority when lawns, weeds and plants grow vigorously but even in winter a garden may deteriorate without regular maintenance.

Plants that are fed well are healthier, resist disease and pest problems, and generally require less maintenance. If a plant is unhealthy, it may be because of a lack of good nutrition, but it can just as easily be because of something else. Healthy plants resist pest and disease problems.

Heat, cold, wind, rain, frost, shade, pollution and other environmental problems can have disastrous effects on plants. Plant varieties vary in their tolerance of these conditions, for example the heat which might kill one plant may simply slow the growth of another. Some plants are very adaptable others not.

This course will show you how to have a healthy garden year round!

WHAT DO I RESEARCH?

Research can be a valuable contribution to our understanding of issues, influences and impact in society today. They can identify specific changes that may be needed.

On the other hand, irrelevant research, no matter how well done or how detailed, is a waste of time, energy and money that could have been much better spent elsewhere.

The first step in doing relevant, worthwhile research is to identify areas, social groups, markets, or organisations that might benefit from it, and the kind of information that might be useful.

Note most governmental and private funding today is tied to these constraints.

The second step is to arrive at a specific topic for research, one that clearly articulates the aim of the research, and defines the focus for the research. It defines clearly the goals: what are we doing the research for?

The third step is to consider whether the proposed research is realistic. This is a necessary step on the analysis as it will help determining the strategies, how we will approach and study the problem. Can it be done in a realistic time frame? Has it already been thoroughly researched by someone else? Are there still important questions to be asked? Is there enough information?

Steps two and three may need to be repeated several times before the final research topic is identified.

Learn to identify, care and use of plants in a systematic way.

This course is a natural progression from Horticulture 1,but can be taken as a subject in its own.

It concentrates on the identification, care and use of plants in a systematic way. Plant knowledge learnt here is in high demand in the horticulture industry. It is something prioritized by employers, but all too often minimized in modern courses due to financial constraints.

Plant knowledge is the foundation of all good Horticulture. People who can identify plants impress employers and clients. Graduates know

  • what to look for when examining plants
  • how to work out what family a plant belongs to
  • ways of narrowing a plant down to determine genus and species after that.·

Plants within a family or genus share common management requirements: learn identification and you have a foundation for managing plants. Identifying plants is something prized by employers, but all too often minimized in modern courses due to financial constraints.

Student Comment: "I have found the course to be interesting and challenging, with great learning materials that really make you research the industry and get involved. Horticulture III {Plant Health) Duration icon 100 hours Qualification icon Statement of Attainment Lessons icon 10 lessons

This course provides the foundation for inspecting diagnosing and treating all types of problems in plants.

This course develops a firm understanding of plant health, the systematic identification of health problems in plants, and the techniques for control of those problems.

Government, nursery and private positions are more demanding then they ever were; employers are becoming increasingly selective choosing personnel with broad horticultural knowledge and less emphasis is placed on the 'learn on the job' approach of years gone by. Education is imperative if you expect to compete in this field and those that have the knowledge will also have the best chance of reaping the rewards.

A sick plant may have one or several causes at the same time.

There are thousands of possible causes which can contribute to a plant's problems. More often than not, there are several factors involved. Minor diseases or environmental problems may weaken the plant, making it susceptible to some more major (obvious) disorder. When you inspect a plant for problems, you should systematically consider all of the things which might possibly be going wrong.

In some qualifications this is only 100 hours, in others 200 or more. This module is added to Industry Project I to create 200 hrs as required in some longer courses. Fees are normally covered by the certificate or diploma fee that this module relates to.

This project is a major part of the course involving the number of hours relevant to the course (see above). Although the course does not contain mandatory work requirements, work experience is seen as highly desirable.

This project is based on applications in the work place and specifically aims to provide the student with the opportunity to apply and integrate skills and knowledge developed through various areas of formal study.

Students will design this project in consultation with a tutor to involve industry based activities in the area of specialized study which they select to follow in the course. The project outcomes may take the form of a written report, folio, visuals or a mixture of forms. Irrigation - Gardens Duration icon 100 hours Qualification icon Statement of Attainment Lessons icon 10 lessons

Select, install and maintain irrigation systems for home gardens, parks or ornamental horticulture.

Water is essential to plant growth and is often the major limitation to productivity. Irrigation is now playing a more important role in horticulture as well as home gardens than ever before.

Irrigation can enable plants or turf to be grown in a dry climate where it would not otherwise be possible. It can supplement the existing rainfall and improve growth rates by extending the growth period of the plant, or it can ensure that there is adequate moisture during critical periods when the plant is growing most rapidly. The value of irrigation can vary greatly from year to year depending on the distribution of rainfall during the growth season.

Irrigation at appropriate times can also improve the quality of turf or the general health of garden plants.

This course that covers the design, installation, maintenance, operation and evaluation of simple irrigation systems. It is similar to BHT 204, BHT 210 or BAG213, but focuses on irrigation for parks, home gardens, and other ornamental horticulture areas.

Organic Plant Culture Duration icon 100 hours Qualification icon Statement of Attainment Lessons icon 10 lessons

Learn to produce organic crops efficiently.

Organic growing of plants works with nature, rather than against it. It recognises the fact that nature is complex and accordingly endeavours to understand interactions between plants, animals and insects. It therefore encourages the gardener for example to learn about the life-cycle of pests and to use this knowledge to control them. It also recognises that the use of chemicals has to be replaced with labour and management. Organic gardeners have to manage pests rather then eliminate them. They need to be vigilant and have the ability to recognise problems and act quickly to minimise the spread of both pests and disease. They may also need to accept some insect damage to the plants they grow as inevitable.

PLANT PATHOLOGY IS NOT simply a study of pests & diseases. Some pests are in fact not pathological problems, and there are pathological problems which are not pests or diseases.

PLANT PATHOLOGY is about problems in plants caused by physiological damage or irritation at a cellular level. It is concerned with problems which affect parts of the plant cell, leading to malfunctions in the normal processes which occur within the plant.

Soil Management - Horticulture Duration icon 100 hours Qualification icon Statement of Attainment Lessons icon 8 lessons

Soil management - the basis for healthy plants and conservation for future generations.

The Soil is a living biological ecosystem that must be managed to the benefit of the crop and to the broader ecosystem of the region. The reason we investigate soil and its characteristics it to understand it in relation to plant growth, how to manage and manipulate it without causing damage, how to improve it generally or how to modify it for the growing of specific crops. Good soil conditions are critical to the healthy growth of most plants.

Nutrient levels, pH, salinity, depth, texture (properties of sand and clay), structure (form and arrangement), porosity (air space), consistence (the ability of soil to withstand rupture) and even colour can affect plant growth independently or interdependently.

Over eight lessons this course will develop an understanding of physical and chemical properties of soils, the ability to carry out simple tests and determine soil characteristics, and to decide ways of treating a soil to improve its ability to grow plants.

The course is specifically designed for ornamental gardens, landscaping, container growing, and turf situations.

Trees For Rehabilitation (Reafforestation) Duration icon 100 hours Qualification icon Statement of Attainment Lessons icon 10 lessons

Would you like to work in a field that helps the environment?

Environmental rehabilitation of degraded landscapes and contaminated sites is an important and growing field - this course covers the fundamentals required to start or advance your career.

The significance of caring for the environment has been receiving more and more attention in recent times as we come to understand the importance of limited resources and the effects of human activities on the environment. The desertification, erosion and general degradation of once fertile lands is prompting us to investigate why and how these processes have occurred. It has also lead to research into how we can reverse and stop further damage to our environment.

Natural forests are amongst the most stable and productive ecosystems. We need to plant and conserve forests for their conservation value, to help maintain healthy air, soil and water and for their potential to provide food, forage, fuel, timber and even medicines.

This course is designed for people working or wanting to work with environmental rehabilitation and contaminated sites recovery. It develops an understanding of environmental systems and the rehabilitation of degraded landscapes. You will learn about seed collection, storage and germination, propagation, plant selection, establishment techniques, and controlling pest and disease after planting.

Weed Control Duration icon 100 hours Qualification icon Statement of Attainment Lessons icon 8 lessons

Learn about effective weed control

In horticultural practice, if weeds are to be controlled, it is critical that they are accurately identified when young. However, weeds are notorious for their diversity and resilience. These two characteristics have made weeds attractive as garden plants in countries to which they are not native.

Young weeds are far easier to control than older and more established weeds. There are many different ways of controlling weed growth, and the effectiveness of each technique is related to the varieties of weeds being controlled. Some chemicals, for instance will effectively kill certain weeds when they are in the early stages of growth, but will not control other types of weeds. You may need to be able to distinguish between types of weeds to determine whether the chemical will or will not work.

Over eight lessons you will learn:

  • to identify and effectively control weeds
  • use both chemical and non-chemical control methods
  • mulching
  • burning
  • mowing
  • how to use spray equipment
  • the safety procedures which should be followed.
